he 78th U.S. Women’s Open, held at Pebble
TBeach Golf Links, has become the cradle of a
new star’s birth. The winner of this competition, Ali-
son Corpuz(25), hailing from Hawaii and a graduate
of USC, made her rookie debut on the LPGA Tour
last season, achieving five top-10 finishes and a run-
ner-up position at the ISPS Handa World Invitational
in August of last year, which was her best perfor-
mance. She marked her first victory after debuting on
the LPGA Tour with a major championship win at the
U.S. Women’s Open.
The youngest among the 1 son and 1 daughter of
Filipino father Marco Corpuz and Korean mother
Mae Corpuz, Curpuz held the second place until the
third day of the competition, Saturday. On the final
day, she took the lead of the champion group and
made her final tee shot.
Being both a rookie and competing in the pressure
of the U.S. Women’s Open, along with the uniqueness
of Pebble Beach as a golf course, raised doubts about
whether this player could make it to victory. Howev-
er, Corpuz remained calm and composed throughout
the tournament.
Ultimately, Corpuz raised the trophy on the 18th
green, concluding an historically remarkable week.
On that day, both her mother and father were pres-
ent, sharing the joy of her victory. Her mother was so
overcome with tears of joy that even conducting an
interview became difficult.
Corpuz, who previously won at the 2014 Hawaii
State Open, demonstrated her skills at USC’s golf
team and also participated in the Curtis Cup. She
graduated from USC graduate school. Corpuz re-
marked, “Everything that has happened this year
seems to have prepared me for this moment. Winning
Alison Corpuz with both of my parents present makes it even more
