Michelle Wie, Curpuz became the second Hawaiian-born
player to win the U.S. Women’s Open. Following her victory,
former President Barack Obama, also an alumnus of Puna-
hou School, congratulated her on Twitter, saying, “Congratu-
lations to Alison, a fellow Hawaiian, on her victory. You make
us all proud.”
Furthermore, superstar Shin Ji-ae, who tied for second
place in the same group for two days, said, “While playing
golf together, I didn’t know she was a Korean mother, but I
thought she was a good player. I’m even happier now that I
know her mother is Korean.” Alison’s manager, a Korean law-
yer with a long history in sports management, also joined in
the celebration of her victory along with her Korean mother
and fans.
